Major relief package unveiled by PM: electricity customers can save up to Rs7.69 per unit
The Prime Minister has made a significant move to alleviate the burden of rising electricity costs by announcing a substantial relief package that provides discounts of up to Rs7.69 per unit for consumers of electricity. This initiative aims to provide immediate financial relief to millions of households and small businesses grappling with high utility bills.
The relief primarily targets domestic users consuming up to 300 units of electricity per month. More than 60% of electricity customers fall into this category, according to official estimates, ensuring that the plan will directly benefit the majority of people. Some relief is also anticipated for certain industries and small businesses, such as agriculture.
Implementation from Next Billing Cycle
Beginning with the upcoming billing cycle, the reduced rates will be applied. Power distribution companies have been instructed to apply the discounts automatically, so customers won't need to apply or provide any documentation. During the press conference, the Prime Minister stated, "This relief package reflects our unwavering commitment to ease the economic pressure on the common man."
No Cost to the Budget of the Nation
The government emphasized that the relief package would not add to the fiscal deficit. It will be funded through enhanced tax revenue, reduction in non-development expenditures, and reallocation of existing subsidies. The Prime Minister also mentioned that talks are ongoing with international partners to support long-term reforms in the power sector.
Public Reaction and Expert Insight
The announcement has sparked a wave of appreciation among citizens. Bills for electricity had grown to be a monthly nightmare. This discount will give us some breathing room,” said a resident from Faisalabad.
While energy analysts applaud the decision, they have urged the government to implement structural reforms. “Short-term relief is important, but we must also focus on eliminating power theft, reducing line losses, and improving overall efficiency in the sector,” said energy expert Dr. Farhan Saleem.
This relief package marks a meaningful step toward restoring public trust and providing economic stability. While it may not resolve all the challenges facing the energy sector, it demonstrates the government’s intent to prioritize the welfare of its citizens—especially during these financially testing times.
