Murtaza Wahab is the son of the late Fauzia Wahab, a veteran PPP leader.  He received his early education at BVS Parsi High School in Karachi before earning a law degree from the University of London and a Bar at Law from Lincoln’s Inn.

His political career gained momentum when he was appointed as an advisor to the Chief Minister of Sindh on Law in 2015.  He later became a Senator in August 2017, serving until March 2018.  He has held important advisory positions over the years, including ones related to climate change, the environment, and the law.

Controversial Appointment as Administrator

The appointment of Murtaza Wahab as Karachi’s Administrator sparked controversy.  The opposition parties, particularly Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), expressed concerns, despite the fact that the PPP fully supported the decision. Sindh Governor Imran Ismail criticized the appointment, arguing that Karachi needed an experienced administrator rather than a political figure.  Despite these objections, Wahab assumed office, taking charge of Karachi’s administrative affairs.

Obstacles During His Time in Office

Wahab faced numerous difficulties as Administrator, including governance issues and legal disputes. In December 2021, the Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered his removal during a case related to the Gutter Bagheecha land dispute.  Despite this setback, he continued to serve until he voluntarily resigned on September 26, 2022, citing personal reasons.  His resignation marked the end of a tenure filled with political and administrative hurdles.

 Later Developments and Political Growth

After Wahab’s resignation, Dr.  Saif-ur-Rehman was appointed as Karachi’s new Administrator on December 8, 2022.  However, Wahab’s political journey did not end there.  In June 2023, he was elected as the Mayor of Karachi, further solidifying his influence in the city’s political landscape.

 Conclusion

Murtaza Wahab’s appointment as Karachi’s Administrator was a significant political move that drew both praise and criticism.  Despite facing opposition and legal challenges, he remained a key player in Karachi’s administration.  His rise to the position of Mayor in 2023 reflects his resilience and ongoing commitment to public service in one of Pakistan’s most complex cities.
